Dean has been at Birmingham City University (formerly known as UCE Birmingham) since 2004 and is currently undertaking a full-time PhD based in the School of Social Sciences. Broadly speaking, his research interests are based around the links that have been constructed between mental health and criminality. His PhD research is primarily focusing upon the links between schizophrenia, schizotypy, violence and violent offending.
During the first year of Dean's PhD he was given the opportunity to teach at a local sixth-form (Kind Edwards VI five ways) where he taught on their A level programme. He contributed to the Psychology & Crime and Research Methods modules.
Dean currently teaches seminar classes on the Introduction to Psychology module (first year).
